Virtualisation

Virtualisation has become a fashionable topic, which is perhaps not surprising, given that it is an extremely important, high-profile concept. It is a unique concept that allows users to have access to an unlimited pool of dynamic resources.

What is virtualisation?

At its core, virtualisation is when multiple (virtual) systems are running simultaneously on the same hardware, in virtual machines running separate operating systems.

What is virtualisation good for?

The capacity of servers often exceeds the resource requirements of the system installed on the hardware. Unused capacity remains on almost all systems, but even for target systems, high load may only occur intermittently, leaving the capacity of the device unused for the rest of the time. Virtualisation targets these spare capacities. Instead of the previous "one system, one hardware" model, it consolidates systems onto sufficiently powerful hardware and distributes the resources of that hardware in the form of virtual machines across systems, creating an optimally utilized and hence cost-effective solution.

What are the additional benefits?

  • The number of hardware devices is decreasing,
  • reduce maintenance costs,
  • reduced electricity consumption,
  • a single virtual hardware interface.
